Service Bulletin Announcements
August 29, 2010

  • The Nor’kirk Bible Study continues its study of the 12 Minor Prophets in the Bible with a study of the Book of Jonah.  Please plan to join us in Price Hall as we review the story behind the Book of Jonah and the allegory of the fish, and how Christ fulfills this account in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.  All are welcome as we continue our study of Scripture every Sunday morning in the Red Sea room following the 8:30 service.

  • “Being Christian” ~ Please plan on joining us each Sunday at 9:30 am in the last room on the right of the CE Wing for our newest adult Sunday School class. “Being Christian” takes the fundamentals of our faith and provides the opportunity to discuss the Bible, our faith and our history. Please contact Tim McNutt at 214-215-4065 or tim.mcnutt@brightco.com if you have questions or need any additional information.

  • Do you crave an oasis in the midst of the hustle-bustle and the chaos that life can present?  Do you have an itch for something more, perhaps a longing to make that “personal relationship with Christ” real and tangible?  The Sunday Morning Small Group may be just the tonic you seek!  This Group is founded on the principle that, by developing and expanding a deep, rich personal connection among our members, we can come to understand more fully our relationship with Christ and Christ’s relationship with us.  And, each Sunday, we lift each other up and explore applying the message of the Bible to our everyday lives.  You are invited!!  Come fill the empty chair that awaits just you each Sunday morning, during Sunday School Hour, in Price Hall!

  • Children’s Church will not be held during the summer.  Children’s Church will resume after Round-Up Sunday in September.

  • Today is the last Sunday of our Summer Sunday School program.  Beginning next Sunday, September 5th, all of our children and youth will begin the program year Sunday School classes.  There will be a class for Preschool meeting in the CE wing of the main building, ARKK Sunday School for grades Kindergarten – 3rd Grade meeting in the ARKK Room of Price Hall, 4th & 5th Grade Sunday School meeting in Room 3 of the CE wing in the main building, Confirmation Class for our 6th graders and above, who have not yet been confirmed, meeting in the Confirmation Classroom in Price Hall, 7th & 8th Grade Sunday School meeting in the back part of the Red Sea Room in Price Hall, and High School Class for those in grades 9-12, meeting in the High School Room in Price Hall.  Come meet your teachers and find out what you will study during the upcoming year!

  • Did you read the above announcement about the new Sunday School year?  Well, if you are in the sixth grade (or if you are beyond sixth grade but have not yet joined the church), then your Sunday School class is the Confirmation Class, and we will have a special meeting next Sunday in the Confirmation classroom, where you will learn all about the requirements and expectations (and fun!) of the coming year.  Bring one or both parents and come prepared to meet your teachers and to hear about the special part of your Spiritual Journey that is about to begin.

  • Enjoy lunch at Chick-fil-A (2652 Old Denton Rd.) on Tuesday, August 31st. from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. and support our preschool!  Just tell the server the receipt goes to The Nor’kirk Presbyterian Preschool.  Our Preschool Children’s Open House is Tuesday, August 31st and the Chick-fil-A cow will be here to get hugs and smiles from children and adults.  Thanks for supporting our Preschool!

  • Rehearsals for the Kirk Orchestra's 11th season begin this week on Wednesday, September 1st and continue weekly at 6:00-7:00 p.m. in the church sanctuary.  There are 33 members on the roster!  About half of those are members of The Nor’kirk.  What began in 2000 as a small, intergenerational group of church members is now a vital outreach into our community.  It is a living, growing ministry of glorifying God through our gifts of music.  If you or someone you know plays an orchestral instrument, come join us!  We are preparing to play in worship services on Sunday, October 24 and present an evening concert that same night at 7pm.  One of the orchestra’s pieces, Ralph Ford’s “In the Fading Light of Autumn”, will feature our own Lane Paschal directing the orchestra, while Charlotte Moellering plays a violin solo.  The orchestra will have an opportunity to test their vocal abilities in this piece as well.  You will not want to miss this!  Contact orchestra director Charlotte Moellering through the church office for more information.

  • The next Men’s Breakfast is this Saturday, September 4th at 8:00 a.m.  Come enjoy good food and fellowship!  Contact John Bara at 972-380-6597 for more information.

  • Monday, September 6th is our next evening meal at the Austin Street Centre.  We will need: donations of cookies, hard boiled eggs, and bananas to round out the evening meal.  We will need volunteers to make sandwiches after the 10:45 service on September 5th, and volunteers to serve the meal at 6:30 p.m. on Labor Day.  How can YOU help?

  • Calling all middle school students!  The fall event you’ve been waiting for since you were a child is coming soon.  Fall YouthQuake, at Camp Gilmont, is a Nor’kirk tradition and we hope you will be a part of it.  The dates are either November 5-7 or November 12-14, and the cost is $97 per person (scholarships are available.)  A packet was mailed to your home this week – look for it and talk to your parents about attending.  You’ll need to let Nancy Pratt know if you want to attend – the deadline for that is Wednesday, September 8th.

  • Sign up now for the Adult Coed Softball League (must be at least 16 years old).  All games are played at McInnish Park between 3:00 & 8:00 p.m. on Sunday evenings beginning September 12th.  Please RSVP to Tim McNutt at Tim.McNutt@brightco.com for more information.

  • Wanted: Volunteer with a sweet tooth.  We are looking for volunteers to pick up day old bakery items from Kroger on Tuesdays and/or Fridays.  Pick ups must be made between mid-morning and 5pm.  The store is located on the northeast corner of Park and Preston.  Collected items need to be brought back to the church, packaged and packed in the designated freezer.  Can you help?  Contact Peg Kinkade at 469-568-1257 if you are interested.

  • Be a Barnabas!  It’s that time of year when we ask for Barnabas volunteers.  It’s easy, fun and rewarding!  Just fill out the form found in this bulletin; put it in the offering plate and you’ll be matched with a Nor’kirk college student for the entire school year.  Then, you will anonymously send cards and little gifts of encouragement throughout the year to your student who may be feeling a little far from home or maybe a little overwhelmed.  Here’s your opportunity to make a difference in the life of a Nor’kirk college youth.  Be a Barnabas.  You’ll be glad you did!  For further information on this rewarding program, you may contact Dora Hilburn at (972) 345-0229.

  • Preschool registration continues for our Fall 2010-Spring 2011 school year.  We are excited to continue to offer our quality early childhood program for 1-5 year olds.  Call or email Diane Haist at the preschool: 972-305-3707 or dianeh@thenorkirk.org.

  • The main sanctuary has developed a roof leak in or near the base of the steeple.  The Building and Grounds Ministry has discussed the problem with an insurance adjuster, a roofing professional, and an expert in fiberglass steeples like ours.  In addition, the manufacturer of the steeple has also been located in East Texas.  Multiple strategies to stop the leak are being explored, but a final solution has not yet been identified.

  • Become a fan of The Nor’kirk -- join us on our Facebook page (The Nor'Kirk Presbyterian Church).  Updates for all events are posted weekly, as well as pictures from the events.  Invite your friends to be Nor'kirk fans as well.  Visitors to The Nor’kirk Facebook will see all the fun and exciting things our little church can do!

  • Did you know that The Nor’kirk has a small team of people who provide meals for members of the church who are in need?  We are looking to expand this team and this is your opportunity to help!  For more information or to lend a helping hand, please contact Tiffany Wylie at 972-418-0277 or Tiffany.Wylie@tylertech.com.

  • Great news! If you have wanted to become more involved in church activities but have not been able to because of lack of childcare, The Nor’kirk is offering a solution.  If you wish to attend ANY Nor’kirk activity but need babysitting, please let Kim Ready know at least 3 days prior to the event and she will contact one of our well-qualified babysitters to watch your children at the church. Additionally, if you would like to add your name to the babysitter totem pole, please contact Kim at 972-395-3742 or maestrokim@verizon.net.
