Service Bulletin Announcements
May 11, 2008

  • The flowers in the sanctuary this morning are given to the glory of God by Bill & Diana Herzog in honor of Travis’ 18th birthday!

  • A big thank you to this morning’s nursery volunteers, Corey Henry and Shannon Hines.  Next week’s volunteers are Erin McClanahan and Mandy McNutt.

  • Did you know that the Presbyterian church (PCUSA) encourages us four times each year to make a special offering, each one dedicated to a particular purpose*?  Today is the Pentecost Offering, and your money given to that purpose will be used to provide a direct way to meet the needs of children at risk, youth, and young adults.  And did you know that the PC(USA) encourages its congregations to keep 40 percent of the Offering to support ministry with children at risk in our local community?  So give generously to this special offering, knowing that 40 cents of each dollar you provide will be given to our local missions ministry group to help them help children in the Carrollton area.  Since 1988, Presbyterians have raised over $7 million through this offering to benefit the younger members of God’s family.

*And in case you are wondering, the other three special offerings are the Christmas Joy offering, the One Great Hour of Sharing offering at Easter, and the Peacemaking offering in October.

  • There is a draft copy of the new Nor’kirk Directory on the table in the Narthex.  Please check your family’s information and make any additions or corrections.  Be sure to include email addresses.  Please initial by your name so we can see who has reviewed it.  This is the last Sunday to make changes!

  • Our thanks to Girl Scout Gold Award candidate, Nichole Fedorko, for planning, purchasing, preparing, and serving a hot meal of ham jambalaya to the residents of the Austin Street Centre on May 5th.  393 people were served a hearty meal.  Special thanks to David Clinesmith (delivery) and Lauren Hopper, Dan, Peg and Ryan Kinkade, and Angi and Bill Parr (servers).  Our next meal is Monday, June 2.

  • The World Mission Committee decided not to go on the Mexican Mission trip due to safety concerns.  But we are still going on a Mission trip!  The Mission Ministry decided to go back to the Presbyterian Pan American School in Kingsville, Texas.  The dates are the same: June 22 – June 28.  More information to come.

  • Every breath can be a challenge for people with Cystic Fibrosis.  Our own David Miller faces the challenge each day.  To raise public awareness and funds in the fight against CF, David will walk in a “Great Strides” walk this Saturday, May 17th.  To learn more about this disease and current research or to sponsor David in his walk, please go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation website at www.cff.org and click on “Great Strides.”  Your financial support will be greatly appreciated!

  • We will be collecting donations of “Blankets and Bears” for Odyssey Hospice on Sunday, May 18th.  There is also a need for Adult Bibs with velcro behind the neck and “wash cloth rolls”.  Contact Lynne Hines at 972-492-8620 for more information.

  • Our 60708 group (6th, 7th and 8th graders) will go to Whirlyball on Sunday, May 18th immediately after church.  The cost is $14.95 per person.  Please contact Jeanne Selby (972-245-6404) for more information.

  • Join us for an EYF (Elementary Youth Fellowship) Swim Party at the home of Amber and Rachel James (425 Wellington Rd., Coppell 75019) on Sunday, May 25th from 1-3 p.m.  Bring $5 for pizza and drinks.  RSVP to Amber James at 972-462-9955 or amber2005@verizon.net.

  • The Nor’kirk Book Club will meet next on Tuesday, May 27th at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Cindy Currie (2615 Dove Creek Ln., Carrollton, 75007).  This month’s book selection is Faith of Our Mothers: The Stories of Presidential Mothers from Mary Washington to Barbara Bush by Harold I. Gullan.  Please join us!  For more information contact Dru Banner at 972-492-7810.

  • Make plans now for a fun night at the Mesquite Championship Rodeo!  The Nor’kirk Preschool has 4 grandstand tickets that they would like to sell for $24 (value $48).  They are good for a Friday evening, now through Sept. 26th.  The Preschool only has 4 tickets, so contact Diane Haist if you are interested.  The proceeds benefit the The Nor’kirk Preschool.

  • Mother’s Day, graduations, summer weddings… need a gift idea!  Purchase a Nor’kirk Prayer Garden Brick!  A lasting tribute will be woven into the brick “sidewalks” of the Celtic Cross in our growing garden.  Order forms are on the table in the Narthex and available from the church office.

  • Wanted: Summer housing for three Korean exchange students (17 and 18 years of age). The two boys are enrolled at Carrollton Christian Academy.  The 18 year old girl is a college student.  If you can open your home and your heart, please contact Susan Hopper at swhopper@verizon.net.

  • Do you have some time between now and July and can you sew?  If so, we need your help!  The Vacation Bible School theme is “Power Lab” and we’d like to dress our volunteers in lab coats, but they are much too expensive to purchase.  So, how about getting out your sewing machine and making a few simple lab coats?  We’ll provide the material.  If you can help, contact Nancy Pratt!

  • The Prayer Garden begins to G-R-O-W!  The arrival of spring weather heralds the beginning of work on our new Prayer Garden.  The irrigation is in, the trees have been planted, and now it’s time to dig!  With the construction of the patio areas, we are ready to ask for your financial support of this project -- help this garden bloom and grow!  We have raised approximately 50% of the funds needed.  Please place your donation in the collection plate with a notation of "Garden."  Thank you for your support of this beautification project.

  • Create a greener Nor’kirk!  It is important to celebrate Earth Day, but even more important to make the daily decisions that will actually DO something for the earth.  Our office staff and Preschool have become wonderful recyclers – follow their lead by bringing your recyclable papers/boxes/junk mail/phone books to the green & yellow paper retriever bin in the church parking lot.  And ask for paper instead of plastic – you can bring your recycling to the church in your paper grocery bags.  Or better yet, take along your own reusable bag for small shopping trips.  Start helping the environment while also raising money to help fund the programs of The Nor’kirk.

  • Every Sunday (in fact ANY day), Cici’s Pizza at Hebron and Old Denton will contribute 10% of any purchases to The Nor’kirk if they are told that the diner is from The Nor’kirk.  Plan at trip to Cici’s!

  • Our Nor’kirk Preschool has begun registration for the Fall of 2008 and the Spring of 2009.  Our toddlers, 2’s, and 2 ½ year olds attend two days per week.  Our 3’s and 3 ½’s attend three days per week, and our Pre K 4’s and Pre K 5’s attend four days per week.  Registration is now open to the public.  Please call Diane Haist at 972-395-3707, or stop by the preschool wing to see and hear the fun of children learning.

  • We are making plans now for an exciting 2008-2009 Sunday School program for our children.  During the summer we will make decisions about new fall curriculum for our 4th & 5th graders and we’ll plan new units for our ARKK children and the Pre-K class.  But the first thing we need to do is find teachers for our children’s classes!  If you are interested in teaching our children during 2008-2009, please contact Sandi Haltom or Nancy Pratt.  We anticipate having three classes:  Pre-Kindergarten, ARKK (grades K-3) and 4th & 5th grades.  Current teachers, we’d love to welcome you back!  Former teachers, come get to know the children who populate our classes!  Never taught?  Join us – you’ll love spending time teaching our youngest disciples about God and Jesus and God’s word, the Bible.

  • It’s never too early to make your summer plans, and we ask that you mark your calendars now for our Nor’kirk Vacation Bible School adventure!  The dates are July 21-25 and we are going to discover Jesus’ Miraculous Power via games, skits, music, art, food, drama, and just lots of fun.  Volunteers are needed to make this week a “powerful” success!  If you’d like to help, please sign the poster in the narthex.  We’ll distribute information soon about how to register to attend.  Make sure your children, grandchildren, neighbors and friends all know the dates and that from July 21-25 The Nor’kirk will be the place to be!

  • Our Board of Deacons would like to remind the congregation that they are here to serve you.  If you are in need of meals, visitation or other services, please contact Tiffany Wylie at 972-418-0277.  Our board includes: Jan Mattson - Moderator, Misty Baptiste, Lawrence Clinton, Dora Hilburn, Lisa McClanahan and Tiffany Wylie.  Our Youth Deacons are Ryan Kinkade and Mandy McNutt.

  • Join Rev. Bill Parr as he leads the Adult Sunday School class each Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. in Room 3 in the CE wing.  We are studying the book of Daniel.  Please join us!

  • Our Sanctuary: As we prepare for worship, we have an opportunity to present our best to God.  From the Introit to the Benediction it is the time for us to be able to focus on God.  Fellowship before the worship service is great, but please finish your food and drink before entering the sanctuary.  Eating, drinking, and leaving the sanctuary during the service distracts others from their worship experience.  Let us all be respectful of each other’s needs.

  • Great news! If you have wanted to become more involved in church activities but have not been able to because of lack of childcare, The Nor’kirk is offering a solution.  If you wish to attend ANY Nor’kirk activity but need babysitting, please let Kim Ready know at least 3 days prior to the event and she will contact one of our well-qualified babysitters to watch your children at the church. Additionally, if you would like to add your name to the babysitter totem pole, please contact Kim at 972-395-3742 or maestrokim@verizon.net.

Older Announcements:

  • Would you like to hear the Mariachi to Mozart concert again, or maybe for the first time?  We recorded it, and a CD is being produced.  Let Ben Ewart (972-317-4205) know if you would like a copy!
